Being a biologist definitely has some awesome perks, like getting to see all sorts of insanely cute creatures, for example.
Remember when I showed you that #CuteOff competition a while back?
You know, that contest where a bunch of biologists posted cute animal pictures on Twitter in order to find the most adorable creature known to mankind?
Well, it turns out one lucky group ofscientists, who operateNautilus Live, just came across a cartoon-like sea critter that could definitely give all ofthose #CuteOff contenders a serious run for their money.
Behold, thestubby squid, a species ofbobtail squid from the northern Pacific Ocean.
Between his squishy purple body and giant googly eyes, this goofy lil’ fella might just be the most precious creature in all of the Pacific Ocean.
Despitehaving the word “squid” in its name, you might be surprised to know this charming critter isn’t actually a squid at all.
Instead, this species is more closely related to cuttlefish, which, if you ask me, makes a lot more sense given its cute and cuddly fish-like appearance.
The Nautilus Live scientists said,
This species spends life on the seafloor, activating a sticky mucus jacket and burrowing into the sediment to camouflage, leaving their eyes poking out to spot prey like shrimp and small fish.
This precious stubby squid was spotted by the Nautilus Live team just off the coast of California at a depth of nearly3,000 feet, and if you happen to have an obsession with cute animal videos like myself, you’ll be glad to know thescientists captured the whole adorable encounter on camera.
Check out the video at the top for a closer look at thisinsanely cute sea creature.
